HOUSEHOLDERS across Keighley are being urged to be more vigilant against the dangers of carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning.

The plea has been issued after a survey revealed that two thirds of people in the region don’t have a CO detector in their home.

Oil heating industry trade body OFTEC has highlighted the findings to coincide with Carbon Monoxide Awareness Month.

CO, which is produced when carbon fuels don’t burn properly, kills more than 50 people and hospitalises over 4,000 every year.

Malcolm Farrow, for OFTEC, who is pictured checking a detector, said: “Carbon monoxide poisoning can have a devastating impact on people’s lives so the lack of awareness is worrying, with many households still oblivious to the dangers.

“We wouldn’t think twice about having smoke alarms installed and we should take the same approach with CO alarms.

“By supporting Carbon Monoxide Awareness Month, we hope to bring more attention to this issue.”

Key symptoms of CO poisoning include tiredness, dizziness and headaches.
