A TAXI driver has spoken of the terrifying moment he was threatened with a screwdriver after arriving home from work to find burglars ransacking his house.

Ashraf Ali, 57, returned home to Parkside Road,West Bowling, to find a vehicle, thought to have been an Audi Q5, blocking the back entrance of his house.

This meant that Mr Ali was unable to drive down the alleyway in order to park his taxi in his usual backyard spot.

Not knowing what was going on, Mr Ali waited, but the terrifying episode then unfolded.

He said those in the car began to beep the horn, which he believes was a message to those inside his house to get out.

Mr Ali said he then saw three people run to the car and noticed that the light in his house was on, which raised his suspicions.

He tried to block them with his car, but he said the group then tried to hit his vehicle.

Mr Ali moved his car and got out and began to film what was going on using his phone, but one of the group tried to take his phone and hit him with what he thinks was a screwdriver.

Luckily, Mr Ali wasn't hurt, but he knew he had to act quickly.

"I ran to my vehicle to save myself," he said.

The culprit then hit the window with the weapon and Mr Ali moved the car again and called the police as the group fled the scene.

But more trauma was to come, as the raiders had turned the house over, leaving a trail of destruction in their wake.

Pictures from inside the house show a scene of chaos and enquiries are underway to establish what has been taken.

"Everything was a mess," Mr Ali said.

"They went through everything."

A door had been smashed through and the culprits had rifled through the house.

"I could not sleep all night," he said.

"I'm frightened and shaken, because they attacked me as well.

"I was lucky he just touched me. My family are all shocked."

He said the raid on his house is one of a number in the area.
