HAWORTH Steampunk weekend brought in visitors from across the UK as the sixth annual event took place.

A huge array of costumes dazzled visitors and locals around the village as organisers aimed to smash last year’s fundraiser in aid of Sue Ryder Manorlands Hospice.

One of the organisers, Leesa DeVantier, said: “It was absolutely fantastic with a great atmosphere. It is growing each year and we hope to beat last year’s fundraiser of £4,300 and reach the £5,000 mark for Sue Ryder.”

The 2018 event included a masquerade ball and burlesque evening, markets, dance and music.

Visitors were able to take advantage of dry weather on the Saturday, but a respectable number of costumed Steampunk enthusiasts still turned up during persistent wet conditions the following day.

Leesa said: “The rain on the Sunday didn’t dampen our spirits, even if it did our attire!

“It was lovely to see a real mix of Steampunks, locals and those who had travelled from afar to join in the fun.

“People came from all over the country, and there was a fantastic selection of outfits and characters.

“The raffle raised £679 over the two days which is just fantastic, and the overall total raised shall be announced soon.

“For next year’s Haworth Steampunk Weekend the dates will be moving forward to October 11 to 13, so we not only hope to have better weather, but it will also allow us to make the event bigger.

“As ever, the aim is to raise a greater charity total year on year, and to create an event that is all inclusive, friendly, interesting and fun.

“We would like to thank all those amazing people who have attended and we hope to see them all next year.”

Among the many visitors present on Sunday were Steampunk fans Marcus and Liz Hemmings from Wyke.

Mr Hemmings, 43, said: “This is our fourth year now and we’ve enjoyed ourselves each time we’ve come along.

“We want to make a bit more effort with our own costumes for next year, because the competition is gearing up.

“Some of the other outfits we’ve seen this time have been really brilliant, and people are always willing to try something different.”
