TALENTED children gathered at Keighley Shared Church for the tenth annual Rotary Young Musician competition.

Fifteen youngsters, aged from 10 to 16, either sang or performed on instruments such as piano, saxophone, cornet, clarinet or electric keyboard.

The performances were judged by Adrienne Fox of Skipton and John Marshall of Thornton who gave constructive, encouraging feedback and chose winners and runners up in each age group.

One singer and one instrumentalist – singer Lili Szasz of Sutton and Ilkley pianist Callum Whitton – were chosen to progress to the district round of the competition to be held in York next spring.

Prizes and certificates were presented by Nancy Holdsworth, president of Keighley Rotary Club.

Rotary spokesman Judy Hazlehurst said: “Competitors travelled from as far away as Wetherby as well as Skipton, Ilkley, Shipley, and Keighley.

“Those in attendance were given an update on Rotary International’s campaign to ‘rid the world of polio’.

“From 1, 000 cases a day in 1985 there have been only 27 cases worldwide so far this year. The wild virus is present in only two countries, Pakistan and Afghanistan.

“Rotarians will not give up until there have been no cases anywhere in the world for 3 years.”
