AN actor from Emmerdale will be outside Haworth this weekend for a protest urging Yorkshire Water to drop grouse shooting.

Nick Miles will join a protest walk on Haworth Moor on Saturday. (Dec 8) He will be among demonstrators from Ban Bloodsports on Yorkshire’s Moors for a protest ramble on the same weekend the grouse shooting season closes.

The campaigners want landowner Yorkshire Water to stop leasing this moorland, and other land across the county, for grouse shooting. They argue it has a negative impact on wildlife, habitat and damages tourist destinations.

Mr Miles said: “Living in Wensleydale, surrounded on three sides by grouse moors, I see first-hand the damaging and destructive practices that go with “moor management” even within a National Park.

“This includes the burning and draining of valuable blanket bog and the destruction of legally protected species, especially our fast vanishing raptors.

“By landowners leasing land for driven grouse shooting the moors are damaged, as wildlife is driven out and tourists melt away. All this for a niche hobby practiced by a wealthy few. I call on landowners to practice proper stewardship of the environment in their care and stop leasing it for driven grouse shooting.”
