A MONTHLY comedy night run by a pair from Keighley and Bingley is celebrating the Year of the Woman this Thursday (Dec 6) by staging an all-women comedian line-up.

Headlining the fully-female comedy night is Steff Todd, the Bingley comedian and impressionist whose Love Island impersonations brought her worldwide attention earlier this year.

The monthly comedy night, Salty Laffs, is held at Tallulah’s Wine Bar in Saltaire on the first Thursday of every month.

It is run by writer and broadcast Nick Ahad - who is originally from Keighley - alongside comedian and belly-dancer Melanie Judson

Mr Ahad said: “It’s a little surprising that we’ve only been running Salty Laffs for a few months.

"We’ve built a reputation quickly and already have regular visitors to the comedy night."

Salty Laffs was born earlier this year when Ms Judson booked Mr Ahad to perform at another event.

She said: “I had been thinking for some time about starting up a comedy night in the Bradford area. It turned out Nick was thinking the same thing, so we decided to join forces.”

While the monthly night is not marketed as a ‘diverse’ comedy night, Mr Ahad and Ms Judson book the acts so the line-up is always majority female or ethnic minority comedians.

Ms Judson said: “We both found that there were relatively few women and ethnic minority comedians at nights where we were performing, so we decided we would make ours a little different.

"We book women and black and ethnic minority comedians, but first and foremost we book people who are funny.”

Mr Ahad said: “Quality comes first. Steff Todd headlining December’s event is a real coup.

"She’s been signed to one of British comedy’s biggest talent agencies and her impressions have gone viral online this year.

"We work pretty hard to get acts like Steff, but it means we have created a really brilliant, funny monthly event.”

Ms Judson explained that she had wanted to mark the final Salty Laffs of 2018 by celebrating the Year of the Woman.

“There are plenty of comedy nights where the acts are all men, so we thought it would be an idea for this final night of the year to be all women comedians,” she said.
