THE prevalence of hidden disabilities features in an ongoing campaign to ensure Keighley's Airedale Shopping Centre is as accessible as possible.

The centre is promoting awareness of the needs of shoppers with disabilities, following the November 13 launch of national campaign – Purple Tuesday.

Signage with the phrase "Not every disability is visible" has been placed around the centre.

Airedale manager Steve Seymour said: “It's crucial to remember almost 20 per cent of UK adults have a disability, 80 per cent of which have an invisible or hidden impairment.

"We want to make sure their experience when visiting us is as enjoyable for them as everyone else.

“The signs we've placed around the centre helps us continue to promote the fact we are an accessible centre, meeting all visitors' needs.

“What's been truly incredible is the response we've received from customers since we put the signs up. It’s great to see so many supporting our efforts to provide the best customer service and accessibility we can.

“The Purple Tuesday campaign was a huge step forward in recognising that not everyone is able to just ‘pop’ to the shops. We're delighted to be part of it."

Purple, the disability organisation which launched the campaign, aims to increase awareness of the needs and contributions made by disabled people and encourage changes in business practices to improve customer experiences.
