PEOPLE needing repeat prescriptions in time for Christmas are being reminded to order them by next Thursday (Dec 20).

District health chiefs are warning that although GP practices will only be closed on the bank holidays, it may be more difficult for patients to obtain medications if they don't plan ahead.

Dr Dave Tatham, clinical lead for urgent and emergency care at the three local clinical commissioning groups, said: "Christmas is a very busy time for many people, however not ordering your repeat prescriptions could mean you don’t have sufficient medication to get you through the period and you risk becoming ill.

"People who don’t have enough of their regular medications can also put a lot of strain on emergency services, which are there to deal with life-threatening illnesses and injuries.

"If you do need repeat medicines during the holiday period, please call NHS 111. It can arrange a small emergency supply until your GP practice reopens."

The benefits of using pharmacies are also being highlighted.

"Pharmacists are experts in the use of medicines and can give people advice without the need for an appointment," added Dr Tatham.

Some pharmacies across Bradford district and Craven will be open over the bank holidays.
