A PAIR of Oxenhope Primary School sports teams demonstrated their skill and stamina by qualifying for regional competitions.

The school's year five boys cross country team has made it to the West Yorkshire Schools Finals, to be held at Temple Newsam in March. Meanwhile, Oxenhope Primary's hockey team has reached the Bradford Schools Winter Games, taking place at Hanson Academy at the end of February.

Commenting on the cross country team's success, Sam Fawcett, the school's sports champion, said: "Not only has the team qualified but three individual pupils have too. Those individuals are William Jones, Yousef Hardaker and Sophia Casson.

"They will be competing against children from all over West Yorkshire. If the children come in the top 10 in the year 5 race they'll be invited to run in the National Schools competition for West Yorkshire, to be held at Prestwold Hall, Leicestershire, at the end of March.

"To qualify our children needed to be placed in the top 20 of the Bradford Schools races, staged at Cliffe Castle. Our year five boys team came second and our individual runners all came within the top 20. It's a fantastic achievement and one we at Oxenhope are very proud of."

Praising the hockey team's efforts, she added: "Our team competed in the Bronte Schools Cluster Quicksticks Hockey tournament in December at Beckfoot Oakbank, and came second.

"They'll be playing against schools from all over Bradford in a bid to reach the West Yorkshire Winter Games."
