A CRAVEN district primary school has started a series of tournaments to give all its eight to 11-year-old pupils the opportunity to try different sports.

The intra-school contests have been launched at Sutton Community Primary (CP).

Anneli Howes, sports and games leader at the school, said: "It’s all about teamwork and doing your best, and it's very important that children can get involved and have fun.

"So we've created eight mixed teams and called them: Beech, Maple, Spruce, Pine, Ash, Willow, Oak and Redwood.

"On January 14 and 15 we enjoyed the first of seven intra-school sports afternoons. After two days of football matches in the bitter cold, some amazing goals, great teamwork and plenty of passion I can reveal the year three and four winners were Team Spruce, with Team Redwood as runners up.

"The year five and six winners were Team Beech, with Team Ash as runners up.

"There were lots of individual children who showed brilliant attitude and stood out as excellent referees as well.

"This is just a beginning, as every point counts towards overall winner at the end of the year. So there’s six more competitions to come, and everything to play for."
