COUNCILLORS in Keighley said they were delighted with the response to an event held to ensure cyclists are properly lit up during the dark winter evenings.
The "Lights for Dark Nights" session was hosted by Keighley town councillors in Bracken Bank's Sue Belcher Centre.
Bracken Bank and Ingrow Ward councillors Barry Thorne, Chris Herd and Samuel Fletcher funded the initiative, allocating money from the town council's ward improvement fund.
People were invited to attend and have lights fitted to their bikes for free, to help improve safety for cyclists in and around Keighley after dark. They could also pick up helmets or high visibility clothing.
The session was organised by community development worker Pip Gibson, with support from Bradford Road Safety Team, Bradford Disability Sport and Leisure and the Keighley Neighbourhood Policing Team.
Cllr Barry Thorne said: "It went exceptionally well and we must have had up to 20 kids there. They listened to advice, were really enthusiastic and showed a lot of common sense.
"I went out later that night and could see them riding around with their new lights. I was really pleased to see that."
The event grew out of concerns voiced late last year by Cllr Thorne. He warned many youngsters were putting themselves in danger by cycling around Bracken Bank after dark with no lights on their bikes.
