COUNCILLORS were updated on the final closure of an Oxenhope institution at their latest meeting.
Cllr Robert Goulding, vice chairman of Oxenhope Parish Council, informed colleagues of the end of Oxenhope Social Club, in Lowertown.
Cllr Goulding, who had also served on the club’s committee, confirmed: “The club ceased trading a few weeks ago and we had our AGM for members to discuss our options.
“We’d reached the end of the line and we’ve decided to put the site of the club up for sale.
“It is very sad and it’s the end of an era, but we were just never going to make the kind of money needed for the necessary repairs.
“The roof was leaking and the electrics were crackling. It was a difficult decision, but it was the right decision.”
The village’s social club, known locally as The Idiot Hut, had been running since 1937. A well attended farewell party was held at the premises on January 26.
