A KEIGHLEY councillor has handed over a £28,000 cheque to charity.
The donation, to the Bingley-based Down Syndrome Training and Support Service, is the last of the funds raised during Cllr Abid Hussain’s year as Lord Mayor of Bradford.
His civic appeal coined-in about £100,000.
The money was split between the Down Syndrome organisation and the Wishing Well Appeal, which awards grants to smaller charities and groups across the district.
Cllr Hussain, who represents Keighley Central, said he was delighted with the amount raised.
“The response to the appeal from people throughout the district was fantastic,” he added.
“This latest donation represented the final chunk of funds.
“I would like to say a big ‘thank you’ to everyone who contributed and gave their support.
“A lot of people worked very hard to raise this amount.
“I enjoyed working with the charities during my term in office and I will continue to do what I can for them. They are great causes.”
Cllr Hussain’s reign as the district’s civic head came to an end last year.
The serving Lord Mayor is a fellow Keighley Central councillor, Zafar Ali, whose appeal is supporting Manorlands and Bradford Nightstop.
