KEIGHLEY’S Girlguiding movement turned out in force today for its annual Thinking Day celebration.

Members took part in a parade and packed into Keighley Shared Church for a service.

The parade, between Town Hall Square and the church, was led by the City of Bradford Pipe Band.

Rainbows, Brownies, Guides and leaders all took part in the celebration.

Guests at the service included Deputy Lieutenant of West Yorkshire Robin Wright, Lord Mayor of Bradford Councillor Zafar Ali, deputy town mayor Councillor Peter Corkindale, Scouts district commissioner Jeanette Young and Girlguiding county and division representatives.

A welcome was given by associate parish priest, the Rev Dr Tracey Raistrick.

Several awards were presented.

The Sarah Robinson Award, given annually for an outstanding contribution to Girlguiding in Keighley, went to Jean Faulkner.

She became a warranted leader in 1985, joining the Keighley division four years later as an assistant Brownie Guider. She has also performed auditing duties.

A number of other awards were also handed out, including long-service accolades.

The Rev Raistrick, who was a member of Girlguiding herself as a youngster, paid tribute to the recipients.

“What a gift to Keighley and its young people they give,” she said.

Flowers were presented to Julie Smith, who was attending her last Thinking Day service as county commissioner.

Members of Keighley South district gave a Time Travel presentation, journeying through the history of Girlguiding.

Famous former Brownies and Guides from across the years were featured, including the then Princess Elizabeth who became a Brownie in 1937. Others spotlighted ranged from Mary Berry to Pixie Lott.

All members of the movement renewed their promises.

A collection taken during the service will be split between the Shared Church and Dementia Friendly Keighley.
