KEIGHLEY MP John Grogan attended a Parliamentary reception celebrating the 150th anniversary of the Building Society Association (BSA).
He was joined by Steve Round, chairman of the Silsden-based Ecology Building Society.
The BSA represents 43 societies – plus four credit unions – across the UK, together serving 25 million customers.
Mr Grogan said: "Building societies are an important part of the social and economic history of our country.
"They were crucial in the expansion of home ownership, which before the First World War was an essential qualification for being allowed to vote.
"The Ecology Building Society, set-up in 1981, is the most recent to join the association.
"With its emphasis on environmental and green investment, it is pointing the way to the future."
