YOUNG people and their parents have a fresh opportunity to learn more about life at Keighley's own Air Cadets unit.

The cadets, who meet at Keighley Drill Hall, in Drill Street, will host an open evening at their base on Wednesday March 27.

The event starts at 7pm and the unit wants to recruit new cadets aged 12 to 17.

Officer in charge, Tracey King, said: "We've had a very good start to the year, with 21 of our cadets passing their "Heart Start", which is a recognised British Heart Foundation qualification.

"It's the first step on the ladder to a First Aid qualification and we include it as part of our training."

She added that since January other members of the cadet group had made impressive progress in pursuits ranging from music to marksmanship, with six completing their Method of Instruction course, enabling them to become Instructor Cadets.

People wanting more information about the open evening can e-mail oc.2431@aircadets.org to get in touch with Mrs King.

Keighley Air Cadets was formed in February 1942, then resurrected in 1965 as a detached 'flight' from Yeadon Squadron. It meets on Monday and Wednesday evenings most of the year.

Youngsters learn about different kinds of aircraft, undergo training at RAF Linton-on-Ouse and take part in air force camps elsewhere in the UK and overseas.

They also enjoy activities such as sports, music and First Aid training, as well as leadership and team building exercises.
