WORSHIPPERS from churches of various denominations across Keighley will gather around a cross in the town centre on Good Friday.

They will be in the Airedale Shopping Centre mall, opposite Costa Coffee, for an act of Silent Witness between 11am and noon.

Keighley Churches Together, who have organised the event, invite any townspeople to unite with fellow Christians to “take a stand”.

A spokesman said: “This year there will be no spoken words or music from us, just a visual presence amongst the shoppers.

“It is hoped this will be a reminder to everyone of the events of the first Easter which culminated in the crucifixion and the resurrection of Jesus.

“This coming weekend is the most important and wonderful time in the Church calendar and we would like to welcome everyone to join us in our churches over Easter to celebrate the hope and renewal brought about by Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross.

“We are hoping that, as shoppers pass by, the visual act of silent witness and our identification with the cross of Christ will make people think, especially as it will be in stark contrast to the noisy hustle and bustle of the town centre around us.”

Good Friday, which will be on April 19 this year, is a Christian holiday commemorating the crucifixion of Jesus and his death at Calvary, as written in the Bible.
