A PROPERLY supervised bonfire night is among the new public entertainments being planned by Keighley Town Council.

The news was delivered as part of a report on the activities of the council's events and leisure committee over the last civic year.

Presenting the report at the Keighley Annual Town Meeting, committee chairman Councillor Kaneez Akthar said she and her council colleagues had staged 11 public events.

These included St George's Day celebrations, Yorkshire Day, a Heritage Day, an International Women's Day event and the inaugural Keighley Community Awards night.

"All this wouldn't have happened without the fantastic team we have at the town council," Cllr Akthar added.

"We've also had the Christmas lunches, attended by more than 200 local residents over two days.

"A Keighley Integration event, designed to bring different communities in Keighley together, is in its planning stages.

"And we're planning a bonfire night gathering. Holding a managed, controlled bonfire night would help out our emergency services at that time of year."

Cllr Akthar added the council was still exploring the idea of staging a special event to honour emergency service workers.
