PLANNED changes designed to speed up some services for patients in Airedale, Wharfedale and Craven are out to public consultation.

NHS Airedale, Wharfedale and Craven Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) wants people’s views on proposals for Airedale NHS Foundation Trust’s wheelchair and orthotics services.

The plans aim to give patients with high, complex needs quicker access to assessments and to prescribed equipment.

Orthotics means aids such as insoles, braces, splints, callipers, footwear, spinal jackets and helmets.

Dr James Thomas, GP and clinical chair at the CCG, said: “Our proposals are about making sure people have the best choice and the most appropriate service. This is vital for people with the most complex, urgent needs.

“However, some people’s needs may be more appropriately met in another way – for example by referral to a physiotherapist or buying readily available aids.

“We’re looking to introduce referral criteria which will help clinicians assess which services are best for patients, reducing waiting times for people with more complex issues.”
