ENTRIES are open for this year’s Oxenhope Straw Race on July 7.

A spokesman said this year’s event was being dedicated to the memory of long-serving chairman Ian Barrett who died in January after a long illness.

She said: “Ian was the chairman of the Straw Race committee for almost 20 years and is sadly missed by his friends and colleagues on the committee.

“In his final months he was cared for at home with the support of the wonderful people at Manorlands, which makes this year’s fundraising all the more poignant.

“We have introduced a crowdfunding page if anyone would like to make a donation. All monies raised go to a number of local charities.

“Manorlands hospice is our main beneficiary but we also support Haworth Riding for the Disabled, Bradford Disability Sports and Leisure, and the Parkinson’s Disease Society, to name a few.”

Visit justgiving.com/crowdfunding/oxenhope-strawrace to make a donation. Visit oxenhopestrawrace.com/join-the-fun to enter the race. The entry fee this year is £40.

Oxenhope Straw Race was started by two men who made a bet about racing from one pub to the next carrying a bale of straw. Now many pairs do the same. Over the years the event has raised a total of £450,000.
