GLOWING recognition has been delivered to a Keighley midwife.

Sharyn Lock, of DalesMidwifery.com, has picked-up two accolades.

She received an Iolanthe Trust Midwives Award to fund a trip to Germany, to extend her knowledge of normal breech births – when a baby is born bottom first instead of head first.

And she is the recipient of the inaugural Mary Kronk Award.

Mary Kronk, a long-serving midwife who was awarded an MBE for her services to women, died in December.

Sharyn said: "Airedale NHS midwives and I are working together to bring the most recent breech birth skills and knowledge into local training.

"The aim is to give women the safest possible support, without the major surgery of a section.

"It is great to have this recognised."

Sharyn runs a free drop-in session at the Roots and Shoots health food shop and cafe, in Cavendish Street, Keighley, on the first Friday of every month, from 10am to noon.

Shop owner, Javed Iqbal, said: "Families may not feel they can get all their questions answered within the time constraints of their NHS appointments.

"We wanted to give them a relaxed space to chat through their concerns and interests around pregnancy and birth, with homemade cakes also available!"
