SETTLE parishioners have again voiced their objection to the town council’s plans to locate a skate park on a play area off Bond Lane.

A second drop-in session was held on Monday asking for opinions on the design and layout.

A survey had also been made available asking people their views, including whether they agreed with the site the town council wanted to build the facility on.

Settle resident Jonathan Mounsey said the town council had launched a survey at the end of last week but he felt it was difficult to use. Instead he printed a batch and a group went door-to-door on Sunday.

“We handed the council over 200 individual surveys, every one stating ‘no’ to the Bond Lane site at the drop-in,” he said.

“This was on top of another 65 against the site emailed directly to councillors from an electronic version of the council’s own survey which we hosted on an online survey platform.”

Mr Mounsey said he has also conducted a Facebook poll which showed 90 per cent of those responding were not in favour of the play area being used.

Settle Primary School headteacher Richard Wright said he was disappointed a public meeting had not been organised but had informed parents of the drop-in session.

He added: “I have tried to be impartial but then with each passing week I have grown in concern for the plans for the skate park in our local park.

“The recent parent survey we sent out produced results that, as a school, we cannot ignore. The parents clearly stated that the chosen location is not the right place for such a project.”

In a letter to the town council, Mr Wright wrote his despair for a local family whose late son’s memorial in the Bond Lane park, is under threat of being moved.

He wrote: “I also again wish to emphasise to you the deep regret that the Toothill family were not properly consulted. I felt a great sense of what could only be described as shame when I witnessed the family at the Settle Town Council meeting being made to vocalise their concerns about the proposal in such a public arena. This has been badly handled.”

Mr Wright has invited members of the town council, plus a suitable representative, to make a presentation to the school and school council for discussions both for and against the plans so pupils can form their own views and opinions.

The town council meets again on Monday, July 1.
