VISITORS to East Morton Gala on Sunday (July 7) can recycle their waste as part of an initiative to reduce plastic in the village.

Recycling bins – supplied by Bradford Council – will be available at the event for people to dispose of plastic bottles, glass, cans and paper.

Single-use plastic cups can't be recycled, but they may be returned to the refreshments stall.

The gala committee is being backed in the venture by Plastic Free East Morton, which will be raising awareness on the day.

"We are hopeful that visitors will support the move and think twice about where to put their rubbish," said Christine Bell, community lead for Plastic Free East Morton.

The eco-minded village also hosts Terracycle collections for crisp packets at the recently-opened East Morton Community Shop and is introducing collections for confectionery and biscuit wrappers.

The shop, where people can also refill reusable water bottles, is opening specially for the gala.

This year's gala has adopted the centenary of peace celebrations in the village for its theme.

The procession will begin at 12.25pm and the official opening is at 1pm.
