AN OPEN afternoon at a newly-created Keighley orchard will encourage people to volunteer their time.

The Friends of Devonshire Park are hosting the event at Redcliffe Community Orchard on August 31 from 1pm to 3pm.

Members want local residents to go along to find out how they could join in caring for the orchard, harvesting the fruit and eating the produce.

Friends spokesman Kate Toch said: “We will be looking for offers of help to maintain the plot and get involved in other activities throughout the year.

“We can let you know which fruit is ripe and when is the best time so you can come along to pick it. Once picked, we can help you with storing, cooking, preserving and using our wonderful apples.”

Help is also wanted to organise an Apple Day in October, design a logo for the orchard and a map of the trees, and prune the fruit trees.

Redcliffe Community Orchard can be found off the ginnel which links Redcliffe Avenue with Devonshire Street, in Highfield.
