A LAY preacher who has been leading services for more than 60 years has called it a day.
Clive Goalen – who is in his 80s – bowed out with a service at Keighley New Church, Braithwaite Village, at the weekend.
He has been a regular visitor to the church, standing in for resident minister the Rev Christine Bank when she was leading services elsewhere.
“Clive has decided that it’s time to put down his pen and enjoy the services other leaders create!” said Keighley New Church council member, Phillip Brooks.
“Our congregation was delighted to be present at his final service, when he preached about the widow’s oil story in 2 Kings Chapter 4.
“The service was something special.”
Mr Goalen was raised in Stockport, where he became involved in New Church while also training as a pharmacist.
He has lived at various places over the years and led services at locations across the north.
Mr Goalen has also served for many years as an adult helper at summer residential holidays for young people at the New Church Centre in Purley Chase.
