AN Oxenhope woman is tackling a gruelling trek in memory of her husband – and to raise money for the hospice which cared for him.

Jane Barrett will join a group next month which is trekking along sections of the Great Wall of China, in aid of Manorlands.

Her husband Ian – who died from bowel cancer in January, aged 53 – was cared for by staff from the Oxenhope Sue Ryder hospice.

“Manorlands has been simply wonderful,” said Jane.

“With the staff’s care and support, Ian was able to remain at home during his final days.

“They also support me and are helping me come to terms with – and live with – my grief.

“I don’t know where I would be without their help.”

Jane has been backed in her fundraising quest by Ian’s former employer, JBA Consulting. The Skipton company has presented her with a £500 cheque.

“Ian had worked for JBA for a number of years and they were so incredibly supportive of him throughout his illness,” she said.

“I am so grateful for that support and for the generous donation.”

Andrew Gubbin, a director with the firm, said it was pleased to be backing the fundraising venture.

“We wish Jane and the whole group the very best of luck for their upcoming trek,” he added.

Jane – who has also been supported in her fundraising by family and friends – has so far coined-in over £4,800, including gift aid.

Manorlands is seeking the next set of intrepid adventurers wishing to follow in the Great Wall of China team’s footsteps.

To promote a range of challenges on offer next year, the hospice has organised an informal information evening for Thursday, November 21, at Manorlands at 7pm, which will be attended by the Discover Adventure company.

Details will be given of four treks across the globe to support the work of Manorlands.
