THERE’S a great few days of music coming up at Settle’s Victoria Hall.

Chris While and Julie Matthews are one of the finest and most loved duos on the British and world folk/roots stages.

They perform at Settle on Thursday, October 10, at 7.30pm.

With 25 years of unrivalled musical partnership and gathering nominations, awards and critical acclaim along the way, the British singer-songwriters are celebrating this year with a new album, ‘Revolution Calls’, and an extensive Autumn tour of the UK as well as numerous summer festivals.

In 2017 they performed music from ‘The Ballads Of Child Migration’ at the Royal Albert Hall as part of the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards alongside Boo Hewerdine, John McCusker, Kris Drever, Barbara Dickson and many more and toured the project in 2018.

On Friday October 11 at 8pm, the Hall presents The Hard Way: the Story of Hannah Mitchell.

From a remote hilltop farm in the Derbyshire moorlands to Manchester city magistrate, this is a one-woman show of storytelling with song by acclaimed musician and composer Louise Jordan.

With two weeks’ formal schooling behind her and through her sheer force of character, Hannah escaped domestic drudgery to become a campaigner, speaker, writer, suffragette, councillor and finally a magistrate.

A self-taught, self-made woman, Hannah left home aged 14 years, exchanging one exploitative situation for another. In 1906 she found herself face to face with Winston Churchill at a public meeting and spent time in Strangeways prison. This show celebrates one woman’s determination to take power in the face of insurmountable barriers, motivated by a desire to improve life for those around her.

Sunday October 13, at 8pm, is the last chance to see the Dodo Street Band in 2019, with a frenzy of European folk melodies, high speed, and epic, transcendental soundscapes.

This explosive band combines fiddle virtuosity from international star Adam Summerhayes; brilliance from top recorder genius, Piers Adams; incredibly high-ABV insanity from accordion master, Murray Grainger; feverish power from bass legend, Malcolm Creese; and dazzling bodhran by Cormac Byrne.
