I HAVE tried now on three occasions to buy rail tickets from the new machine at Steeton & Silsden Station, but have abandoned the attempt each time.

Compared with the previous machine, there are now too many options to navigate. And if you think you have managed these, it seems reluctant to deliver a ticket – it was completely unresponsive to the final 'get train times & tickets' button. All this happening with a queue of other travellers behind me muttering and looking at their watches.

I was fortunate enough to be able to buy a ticket on board the train, although this is not always possible, and there are written warnings about the legal requirement to buy a ticket before you travel.

When I arrived at Skipton I spoke to a ticket collector, asking if I was alone in my concern about these new machines. He pointed to the long queue at the manned ticket office – and then at the queue-less ticket machine nearby!
