PLANS for a new drinking spot in a village have divided opinion.
Some councillors and residents have voiced concerns over the scheme, to convert a former bric-a-brac shop in Main Street, Haworth.
But backing for the proposals has also been expressed, with a number of people taking to social media in support of the applicant.
Daryl Ley is seeking permission from Bradford Council for a change of use of the currently-vacant shop at 17 Main Street into a drinking establishment, and to replace the shopfront.
A statement supporting the application says the aim is to create “a relaxed social meeting place” which would offer a selection of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages.
It is also intended to provide local information for visitors – following the closure of Haworth’s Visitor Information Centre – a free mini-library and space for community workshops.
The report claims the vitality of Main Street has been declining for a number of years and that the initiative will help reverse that decline.
However – in a submission to the local authority – Haworth, Cross Roads & Stanbury Parish Council’s planning committee raises several issues.
It says that despite the provision by the applicant of a noise management plan, concerns remain about potential noise problems – particularly for residents living above the premises.
The committee also fears that customers wishing to smoke or vape outside would pose a nuisance to those living in the vicinity.
Other matters highlighted include the possible presence of bats at the rear of the site, and concern about a proposed one-hour drinking-up period which the committee says is unacceptable.
Worth Valley ward district councillor Rebecca Poulsen has also outlined to the authority a number of anxieties raised with her by residents.
“The bottom section of Main Street is heavily residential...the impact on residents of noise is a major concern to many,” she said.
Cllr Poulsen adds that the claims over the decline of Main Street are dated and incorrect, and that the opposite is true.
Several online posts are backing the proposals.
CleggynowWalshy says: “Wasn’t there a drinking establishment, a sophisticated wine bar, a few doors up? There were no issues to my knowledge back then. Daryl is only trying to better the place for locals and tourists alike. He wants to turn it into a community hub for us all to enjoy. I feel it will complement the other establishments at the bottom of Main Street. Come on people, where is your community spirit?”
And Chris Elrick says: “This is fantastic news for Haworth...great to see derelict properties coming back to life.”
