A PLEA to the public has been issued as Keighley Poppy Appeal prepares to get under way.

Volunteers are needed to help distribute boxes and to sell poppies.

This year’s appeal will officially launch on Saturday, October 26.

Keighley Royal British Legion chairman and secretary, Jackie McGinnis, said the need for helpers was as great as ever.

The number of drivers available to take poppy collection boxes to locations across the Keighley area has dropped.

There are over 300 boxes for distribution to venues including shops, pubs, churches and schools.

“We have 15 routes to cover so it is a huge task,” said Jackie.

“There are only about five drivers at present, so if there is anyone who could spare a little time to help out it would be greatly appreciated.”

People are also needed to sell poppies at locations such as supermarkets and in the town centre.

Uniformed cadets will be helping out and several organisations, such as Rotary and People First, are giving support. But extra assistance is needed.

“The good people of Keighley turn out every year to contribute to the poppy appeal in an amazing way and we appreciate the support – but due to age and infirmity our numbers are shrinking,” said Jackie.

“We are asking for volunteers to come out and help us raise even more than last year – which was over £47,000.”

The ‘poppy shop’ this year will be located in the unit previously occupied by a florist, next door to the former post office – now Betfred – in Towngate.

A short launch event will take place at the shop at 9.45am on October 26.

It will then be open Mondays to Saturdays, from 10am to 4pm, and possibly for a few hours on Sundays.

“As well as poppies there will be other items for sale to help raise money,” said Jackie.

“Please pop in and see us!”

A short service – led by town chaplain, the Rev Dr Jonathan Pritchard – will take place at the garden of remembrance, in Town Hall Square, at 11am on Thursday, November 7.

And services will be staged as usual across the Keighley district on Remembrance Sunday, November 10.

In addition to seeking volunteers, the Poppy Appeal team is asking the public to give its support by donating.

“Please give generously to support our veterans young and old – who have all laid their lives on the line so that we may continue to live in safety in this country,” said Jackie. “Last year of course had added significance because it marked the centenary of the end of the First World War, but we hope people will again rally round.”
