OAKWORTH Methodist Church is the latest group to gain Dementia Friendly Keighley’s Recognition Award.

The church has worked hard to look at its building, the services it provides to the local community, and how it can best support those living with dementia.

Following a review of the building, signage was made clearer and lighting more appropriate, and a recent refurbishment declared ‘dementia-friendly’.

Church members attended a Dementia Friends session to improve their understanding of the disease and help those affected feel included and welcome.

The award will be reviewed annually to help the church continue to implement changes.

Val Cadamarteri, steward of Oakworth Methodist Church, said the project had helped church members accommodate the needs of people living with, or affected by, dementia.

She said: “The award process has been interesting and enlightening, raising awareness of things we need to consider in all areas of our work. This has helped us accommodate the needs of those affected by dementia.”

The Recognition Award was established by DFK as part of their aim to change the way people think, talk and act about dementia.

Businesses and organisations are given guidance to help them understand dementia and to help them adapt to become more dementia-friendly.

A spokesman said: “We would like to thank Oakworth Methodist Church for their commitment and hard work in supporting those living with dementia and look forward to continuing the partnership.”
