KEIGHLEY-district schools will next week take part in a celebration of Bradford Libraries’ summer reading challenge.

The challenge, now in its 20th year, continues to go from strength to strength.

This year, more than 3,200 youngsters participated in the initiative, during the school summer holidays.

There was a Space Chase theme.

Children were challenged to read six or more books, collecting incentives along the way and receiving a certificate and medal on completion. There was also a host of free activities at libraries.

On Tuesday (Oct 22), a celebration will be held – in partnership with the Science and Media Museum in Bradford – at the Pictureville Cinema.

Pupils from some of the schools involved in the challenge will attend.

Among those present will be youngsters from East Morton and Harden primary schools.

The Lord Mayor of Bradford, Keighley councillor Doreen Lee, will hand out awards.

And the children will enjoy Space Chase fun with children’s author Andrew Newbound and discover how reading about the moon has shaped the career of physicist Mark Wrigley.

Councillor Sarah Ferriby, Bradford Council’s executive member for healthy people and places, said: “This challenge gets better each year, with thousands taking part. It really inspires our children to read and it is great that we are able to celebrate its success.”
