HEALTHCARE advice is being offered to help people across the district stay well this winter.

Bradford District Care NHS Foundation Trust is providing guidance in support of the Help Us Help You campaign.

A range of tips – together with advice on preventing flu, keeping young children well, foot health and mental wellbeing – has been posted on the trust’s website.

Trust bosses say winter weather can cause particular problems for over-65s and people with long-term health issues such as diabetes, or heart or respiratory conditions like asthma.

“It’s particularly important that people in these groups have the information they need to spot the signs of illness and treat them early,” said Sarah Horsfall, district nurse at the care trust.

“The colder months can affect our elderly relatives, friends and neighbours who might not be able to get out and about easily in the wind, ice or snow – so as well as looking after yourself and your family, please do keep an eye out for vulnerable people nearby who may need extra help.

“Staying warm is really important too. Wrap up when you go out and keep your house warm when you’re at home. Young children, the elderly, people with long-term conditions and those who care for vulnerable loved ones at home are all eligible for a flu vaccination – so if you’ve not had yours yet, check with your GP or pharmacist.”

People with minor illnesses – such as sore throats, coughs, colds, an upset stomach or aches – should visit a pharmacist first.

Problems like diarrhoea, vomiting, sore throats and colds are usually caused by a virus so should clear up within a few days to a week. Symptoms can be treated at home with over-the-counter medicines.

In a life-threatening emergency, dial 999.

And anyone living in Bradford, Airedale, Wharfedale or Craven suffering a mental health crisis can call the first response service on 01274 221181.

As part of Self-Care Week, which begins on Monday (Nov 18), the care trust has partnered with Bradford Council’s Living Well initiative and Age UK Bradford District to stage events offering advice.

The first will held in Keighley’s Airedale Shopping Centre on Monday, from 10am to 2pm, and a second takes place on Thursday, November 21 at the Broadway Shopping Centre in Bradford, between 9am and 1pm.

Stalls are manned by community nurses and Age UK staff.

Age UK Bradford District director of services Stephanie Smith said: “Over the winter period we support an increased number of older people across the district who are struggling to maintain a warm home environment, and the ‘eat or heat’ deliberation is sadly very real.”
