A BLUE plaque is to be provided in tribute to a footballer who died aged 29.

The plaque is being installed at the New Inn, Wilsden, where Jeff Hall lived as a child.

During his tragically-brief professional playing career, which spanned just eight years, Jeff made 227 appearances for Birmingham City and played 17 times for England.

He died in 1959 after contracting polio.

The plaque is the result of a successful crowdfunding campaign, which also raised enough to clean-up Jeff’s grave – at Wilsden Cemetery, in Shay Lane.

Anyone is welcome to attend the unveiling of the plaque, at the New Inn on Saturday, November 23, at 11.30am.

The ceremony will be performed by Chris Miller, Jeff’s nephew.

Refreshments will be available.

Village councillor Jane Callaghan, who spearheaded the crowdfunding initiative on behalf of Wilsden Parish Council, said: “Jeff was a footballing legend but he was in danger of being forgotten in the place which was quietly but emphatically proud of him.

“I am delighted that the blue plaque has come to fruition.”
