PARKSIDE School students wrote a poem with award-winning writer Jamie Thrasivoulou and read it aloud at an arts festival.

Students created the poems during the workshop at school at the Cullingworth school in advance of the Keighley Arts and Film Festival.

As part of their involvement with Jamie and the arts Festival, the students also took part in activities at Cliffe Castle Park in Keighley.

Jeanette Butterworth, Head of Special Educational Needs at the school, said the "amazing" opportunity came through Arts Council England and the ICLS organisation.

She said: "The students looked at their family history and thought about people in their lives and community. Collectively they wrote a spoken poem and delivered it to the public at the opening event the festival at Cliffe Castle.

"This was an exciting opportunity for our young people to be motivated and involved with an award-winning writer.

"It took a great deal of courage, self confidence and determination for these students to stand up on a Friday night and perform their poetry in front of the general public, friends and family. We are hugely proud of them!"
