AROUND 5,360 children in the Bradford district don’t have a single book of their own, new research has revealed.

And the study, by the National Literacy Trust, found that young people aged nine to 18 who do own books are six times more likely to read above the expected level for their age.

In the past year, Bradford Stories – which is run by the trust – has gifted 4,200 new books to children and young people across the district.

It is calling on the public to also give its support this Christmas.

The trust has produced an ‘advent calendar’ of children’s books recommended by 24 leading authors and illustrators.

One book a day from the list is being shared on the charity’s social media channels throughout advent.

The list can be found at wordsforlife.org.uk, where families can also take part in a Christmas book giveaway and access a range of free festive reading and writing activities. The book giveaway closes on December 13.

Imran Hafeez, Bradford Stories manager, said: “Books have the power to transform children’s reading skills, enjoyment and mental wellbeing. There are so many children in Bradford district missing out on the chance to reach their full potential because they don’t have a book of their own at home. Residents can help us give the gift of reading to children.”
