STANDARDS have been praised in an annual awards scheme staged by Harden-based sports-turf specialist STRI.

Ecology consultants from the firm, whose base is on the St Ives estate, spent two months visiting contenders in the Golf Environment Awards.

Now a shortlist of finalists has been drawn-up and winners will be announced at a ceremony in Harrogate on January 22.

The awards, which next year will celebrate their 25th anniversary, recognise golf clubs and individuals that strive to undertake environmental best practice.

Among those in the running for an accolade is Bingley St Ives Golf Club.

Judge, Rowan Rumball, said: “We have had some amazing and very worthy entrants and judging was exceptionally difficult. I have seen some superb projects.”

Bob Taylor, head of ecology at STRI, said the awards had become the leading accolade for ecological and environmental excellence within the golf industry.

“Many greenkeepers tell me the awards represent something to aspire to and provide an opportunity to market the work they do,” he added.
