BEING Young In Bradford is the title of a photographic exhibition running in the city until Saturday, December 21.

Trapezium Gallery at 58 Kirkgate is showing pictures from the archive of Being Bradford, a snapshot of Bradford’s youth culture in the 1970s and 80s.

The Being Bradford collective are sharing their memories of an eclectic, vibrant and dynamic musical culture that gave them an identity, a voice and a sense of belonging that forged friendships still flourishing today.

The Gallery’s Pauline Cooke said: “We welcome this opportunity to fulfil our ethos of showcasing local artistic endeavour and documenting the historical background of Bradford through the eyes of those that lived it. We hope it will resonate with others’ memories of the past.

“The Being Young In Bradford exhibition is the first at Trapezium Gallery’s splendid new home, opposite McDonald’s.

A Being Bradford spokesman said: “Being Young In Bradford is a collection of photographic memories showing the fashion, music and other wonders that occupied our young minds and time during the 1970s and 1980s - over 40 years ago!

“Most of us are now in our 60s and we’ve assembled a great collection of pictures reminding us of the way we remember being young in Bradford.

“The six contributors to this exhibition were once an eclectic group of enthusiastic teenagers who embraced punk, mod, scooters, soundsystems, reggae and all points in between, as they appeared in Bradford in the 1970s onwards.

“Most of us still follow the music, philosophy and fashions in one way or another to this day, in a vibrant and fondly nostalgic way.”
