THE BISHOP of Leeds will lead a service to end 12 months of 150th anniversary celebrations at St Thomas's Church in Sutton.

Anyone with connections to the church or village is welcome to attend the service led by the Rt Rev Nick Baines on Sunday December 22 at 3pm.

Guests will include descendants of Thomas Bairstow, the millowner whose generosity led to the building of the church.

Children from local primary schools will be burying time capsules imitating the bottle laid in the foundations of the church containing ‘a newspaper and coin of the realm’.

In honour of the occasion, the church is decorated with trees provided by local organisations and businesses, and new aerial photos of the church have been taken.

The Rev Helen Collings, vicar at St Thomas’s, said: “This is an amazing opportunity to celebrate the last 150 years in the life of the church and its service to the community, and to look forward to the future. Please do join us on this special day.”
