KEIGHLEY Big Local is going hi-tech for its latest joint venture with debt-busting Bradford Credit Union.

The groups are organising a special training session on Safer Internet Day under the banner of the Anti-Poverty Events Group.

Professionals and others who work with vulnerable people will be shown how to help clients keep safe online, and recognise fake news and scams.

The free event, at Keighley College on Thursday February 13 from 9.30am to 12.30pm, will feature keynote speeches on The Rise of Fake News and Safeguarding Children Online.

There will be workshops on cyber security, Health and the Internet, Digital Finance and online gambling, which will give people a chance to share information and network.

Big Local coordinator Shaun O’Hare said the February 13 event was being organised on the back of “really successful” joint projects held for Keighley residents last year.

These included carnival-themed fun days in Hainworth Wood and Thwaites to advise parents on how to get through the summer holidays on a shoestring.

Ten families who attended the events signed up for Credit Union savings plans, which aim to help residents across Bradford district keep out of the clutches of loan sharks.

Shaun said: “We utilised the skills of social enterprises that we support, such as Family Jam and the Play Team, to help engage with Keighley residents.

“The work we did with Bradford Credit Union exceeded almost all of the targets set. The achievements were recognised, and both the Credit Union and Big Local have been asked to share experiences at national conferences.

“We hope to coordinate more partnership work to help tackle some of the issues we’re whereas in Keighley.”

Rich Sutcliffe from Agency for Good will lead the February 13 event. He will also offer organisations with a social purpose up to six hours of free marketing advice.

The Anti-Poverty Events Group is made up of community organisations across the district including Bradford Council and the charities Barnardos and Carers Resource.
