LATEST NEWS: Counter Terrorism Unit still searching one property as arrested man released under investigation

A RESIDENT was left shocked and shouted for her kids after her street was cordoned off due to a Counter Terrorism Unit (CTU) operation.

The operation took place on Sutton Avenue and saw a 38-year-old man arrested on suspicion of explosive offences, at around 11:45am on Friday morning.

The arrest was pre-planned and intelligence led, according to a CTU spokesperson.

Police cordoned off the street, at its junction with King's Road and Swain House Road, while three houses were searched in connection with the investigation.

Part of the main road was also closed, which caused traffic chaos throughout the day.

The CTU spokesperson said: "Following the discovery of some items at one of the properties in Bradford, EOD (bomb disposal team) were called to provide specialist advice and to arrange safe removal of the items.

"As a precautionary measure a cordon was put in place and a number of local residents were evacuated while examinations were conducted."

A resident who lives on the street said they were out of the house in the morning and was shocked when they returned at 11 o'clock to find police putting a cordon in place.

She said: "I was really shocked. I immediately started shouting at them.

"Shouting to go get my kids, because it's your first thought."

The resident was hanging round the cordon at around 2:39pm and worriedly checking her phone for any news of her kids, who attend Hanson School which is just behind Sutton Avenue.

A statement from the school's headteacher said staff and pupils were to leave the school by Grove House (Myers Lane), due to the Sutton Avenue and Goals entrances being shut.

The Sutton Avenue resident said: "My husband has had to pick the kids up, because they don't know the way back from that route.

"We don't know when we'll be able to go home - we've not been informed or anything.

"Obviously when it's on your street - nothing ever happens on that street, apart from kids.

"It's a quiet street normally."

The CTU spokesperson said the cordon was removed at around 3:30pm, with residents allowed to return to their homes.

Searches continued at the three properties, but they were not believed to present any risk to the public.

Hanson and Swain House Primary were on lockdown throughout much of the day, but students and staff were deemed to be in no danger.

Residents were left in fear following the day-long incident.

A resident of a house on King's Road witnessed the situation unfold across the day.

She described how police cars came racing up King's Road, followed by HART (Hazardous Response Team) vehicles and then the EDO van.

The woman said it was scary and admitted there is always something going on in the area.

She added: "It's not a good area, it used to be but.

"I have a friend who lives on Sutton Avenue and my friend is quite ill at the minute so I was worried and panicking."
