YOUTHS were seen running from a building after an arson attack on a derelict care home.

Police were called by the fire service to a huge blaze at a derelict residential care home, in Mead View, Holme Wood, yesterday morning.

It happened at around 11:48am.

The care home was engulfed in flames and huge plumes of smoke could be seen rising from the large building.

On a video sent to the T&A an intense crackling can be heard as the blaze builds and burns through the building (below).

A police spokesperson said: "Youths had been seen running from the building around the time of the fire.

"The incident is being investigated as arson.

"The local neighbourhood policing team has been made aware of the incident and is continuing its ongoing work to tackle anti-social behaviour in the area."

There were fears raised less than a week ago that the derelict care home - which shut in 2017 - could become a target for arsonists, if it was not dealt with.

Matt Edwards, a Green Party campaigner in the ward, said on January 20 that people have been concerned about the "deterioration" of the site since Bradford Council sold it in 2018.

In light of this recent attack he added: "This was the exact thing I was worried about.

"The people living nearby deserve better than this and Bradford Council need to take enforcement action.

"It's completely unacceptable this site has been left like this and the landowner should be ashamed of themselves."

West Yorkshire Police is now appealing for information in relation to the fire.

Anyone who witnessed anything suspicious or who has any information that could assist is asked to contact officers via 101.
