SOUTH Craven householders will pay an extra 3.99 per cent in council tax to North Yorkshire County Council.

The figure, which includes a two per cent social care precept, was set as the authority agreed its 2020-21 budget package.

The council says the rise will equate to £4.36 per month for an average household.

A report to the meeting said the county council’s financial planning was dependent on nearly £62 million of temporary funding, and so – like many councils – it was operating amid huge uncertainty.

Around £136m in direct grants from Government had been lost since 2011.

County council leader, Carl Les, said: “We urgently need some long-term funding solutions, particularly for adult social care, as the burden cannot continue to fall on the council tax payer. We need a cross-party national solution to this issue.

“We welcome the new Government honouring a pledge to provide additional social care funding and to repeat one-off grants for a further year, which helps us to continue to deliver high-quality services.

“We’re also grateful to the county’s MPs for their advocacy in helping us to ensure that North Yorkshire has a voice at national level.

“However, we urgently need an end to temporary funding and a more permanent solution via a full spending review.”
