DENHOLME Primary School pupils are in the news.

They and parents – together with counterparts from a school at Allerton – took part in an event staged as part of a week-long NewsWise festival.

A 41-strong contingent from Denholme and St James’ Academy participated in a series of activities and games at Bradford City’s Utilita Energy Stadium.

NewsWise teamed-up with the Bradford City FC Community Foundation and Bradford Stories to run the event.

The football club’s mascot, Billy Bantam, was also present.

The aim was to help families develop educational skills to identify false or misleading information and seek out reliable news sources.

One Denholme Primary pupil said: “It was fun playing with photos and images and learning how to change them. I created a giant dinosaur which looked like it was going to eat me! I know what to look out for now when I come across news stories and how to stop and check.”

The award-winning NewsWise project was launched in 2018 by The Guardian Foundation, National Literacy Trust and PSHE Association – with funding from Google – to equip children with the skills and knowledge to engage with and challenge news.

Festivals are being staged in towns and cities across the UK, which have a high proportion of disadvantaged communities, as an extension of the scheme.

They feature fun and educational news literacy activities including a family event, in-school workshops and teacher training sessions.

Free curriculum-linked resources are also being made available, together with tips for parents to support their child’s news literacy at home.

Workshops staged as part of the venture have included one at Ingrow Primary.

Ian Ormondroyd, chief executive of the Bradford City FC Community Foundation, said: “We were delighted to work with the NewsWise team to help local families engage in the news together.

“It was great to involve Billy Bantam in the event – he had a fantastic time answering brilliant questions put to him by the children and parents taking part in a press conference.”
