YOUTH club activities across Keighley, Silsden and the Worth Valley have been highlighted to councillors.

Keighley Area Committee were presented with a detailed report showing the wide range of activities and events in recent months involving teenagers.

Councillors heard how informal soccer games by Silsden Youth Club members grew into a tournament with youth teams from across the area.

The Silsden youngsters, aged 14 to 17, regularly used the multi-use games court at the Hive community centre, next to the youth club.

The report stated: “They wanted to put their football skills to the test and wanted more of a challenge. They suggested playing 11-a-side games against teams of similar ages to themselves.

This enabled young people to gain different experiences of playing against other teams travel to other areas, and meet with others of their peer group.

The Hive has secured £25,000 from Sport England to resurface the games area, for use by the youth club and other groups.

Young people in Braithwaite also took part in sports sessions, going on to take part in the Keighley-wide Srebrenica Football Tournament.

More than 40 young people regularly attend sessions at the Keith Thompson Centre in Braithwaite, with many also getting involved in volunteering across the district.

They teamed up with youngsters from the Sue Belcher Centre in Bracken Bank for a ‘community cohesion’ event playing Laser Quest

Weekly sessions at the Sue Belcher Centre attract more than 30 young people for activities including cook-and-eat, sports and community clean-ups.

The Keighley Sound Group for LGBTQ+ youngsters were visited by David Harland of West Yorkshire police, who spoke about being in ‘out’ gay police police.

The report stated: “The group were able to ask lots of questions and found his positive journey inspirational.”

Keighley Youth Service took part in a live link-up for the re-twinning of Haworth with Machu Picchu in Peru.

Two local young people are on a working group looking to bring a youth group from Machu Picchu to Keighley.

The report also revealed that youth workers were out and about working with young people in Hainworth Wood, Stockbridge and Long Lee.

Keighley Healthy Living had run sessions for youngsters in Parkwood to look at health and fitness.
