A SECOND annual awards scheme has been launched to recognise and celebrate those across Keighley who ‘go the extra mile’.

Keighley Town Council is seeking nominations for its 2020 Community Awards.

There are eight categories, two of which have been named in memory of former town councillors who have died in recent months.

The Barry Thorne Sporting Hero of the Year Award will pay tribute to someone who has made an outstanding contribution to local sport over several years.

And the Gary Pedley Community Award of the Year will honour a person who has made a significant contribution to their community. Nominees in the category should be “serving as a role model for compassion and service” and be striving to make Keighley a better place.

Other awards are Neighbour of the Year, Volunteer of the Year, Teacher of the Year, Inspiring Young Person of the Year, Emergency Services Hero of the Year and Carer/Support Worker of the Year, plus a Lifetime Achievement Award will be presented.

All those shortlisted will be invited to a VIP awards evening at Victoria Hall, Keighley, on Friday, April 3.

Town mayor, Councillor Peter Corkindale, says the accolades are a way of thanking those who go above and beyond for their communities.

He added: “The scheme aims to recognise and celebrate the work of people, groups and organisations whose dedication and commitment have improved the lives and wellbeing of local residents.

“If people know someone who they feel should receive special recognition, they are welcome to start nominating.”

Councillor Michael Westerman, chairman of the town council’s events and leisure committee, said the aim was for this year’s awards to be “bigger and better” than the inaugural event.

“We want to celebrate and reward the unsung stars of our town,” he added.

“I hope the people of Keighley will support the event by nominating those amazing people who deserve such recognition.”

Application forms can be downloaded at keighley.gov.uk, or e-mail info@keighley.gov.uk.

Tickets for the presentation evening can also be obtained – priced £10, including a three-course meal and entertainment – by e-mailing the town council.

Nominations close at 5pm on Wednesday, March 18.
