The Lyme Regis town bus service will be suspended from next week.

The bus operator, Go South Coast, said it had reviewed the viability of all its services and has announced the suspension of the 71 route from Monday, April 6.

Go South Coast said the service, which is subsidised by the town council, saw a decline in passenger numbers from Tuesday, March 24, and the route is paired with the school route, which has also been suspended.

But the operator has given an assurance the service will resume when the situation improves.

A spokesperson for Go South Coast said: "We’re having to react as best we can to the current crisis and we have had to review the viability of all of our services.

"Unfortunately, we must temporarily suspend route 71 from Monday, April 6.

"The decision to suspend route 71 is a small part of a much greater effort to curtail our activities to a sustainable level and ensure the survival of the company.

"Please be assured that we are confident that we will be in a position to resume the service when circumstances improve."
