BASINGSTOKE'S MP has paid tribute to the people who have volunteered to help vulnerable people across the town during the coronavirus crisis.

Maria Miller said that ten community hubs has been set up across the town by local community organisations to create a network of support.

Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council are working with Basingstoke Voluntary Action to set up the support.

Mrs Miller said that the town was "coming together" to offer support "like never before".

She said: "It is great to see well known and trusted local charities like Inspero and Spotlight, working with churches and community centres to form a virtual network of help and support to help provide reassurance to residents that, if they need it, help is close by.

"Each hub is offering a range of services, particularly for people who are unable to leave the house and have no help nearby from neighbours, family or friends.

“Basingstoke community groups are coming together across the town to support residents like never before.

"And you can volunteer to play your part by signing up to be a volunteer on the BVA website wwwbvaction.org.uk”

Of those having set up support is the Telagu, Hindu Society and Nepalese community, who are providing the hub for the centre of the town out of Carnival Hall. They are working with local restaurants in Basingstoke to provide hot meals for emergency service workers three times a week.

There is also a Hampshire-wide coronavirus helpline for those vulnerable residents who do not have support from friends and family. You can get in touch on 0333 370 4000. They are open seven days a week from 9am-5pm.
