SUPPORT is still available for the district’s breastfeeding mums during lockdown.

That’s the message from health chiefs in the area, who say technology is being used to ensure mothers can continue accessing information and advice.

Face-to-face clinics and visits are currently unavailable owing to the coronavirus crisis.

But mums with breastfeeding worries can utilise other options, from requesting a telephone appointment to video calls.

Jane Dickens, strategic breastfeeding lead at Bradford District Care NHS Foundation Trust, said: “Telephone appointments are available with midwives and health visitors.

“And for tips, techniques and encouragement from mums who’ve been there, Bradford Breastfeeding Buddies offer a virtual support group on a Tuesday and Friday – or a one-to-one video call.

“If you need support in a language other than English, Better Start Bradford’s breastfeeding team offers telephone and email advice in several languages.

“We want mums to know that all our services are very much #StillHereToHelp.”

Highlighting the benefits of breastfeeding, she added: “Coronavirus has made everyone aware how important it is to have a healthy immune system.

“Breast milk is full of antibodies which are an essential part of a baby’s immune system. And breastfeeding helps to develop the bond between mother and baby.”

Mums can also obtain information via the care trust’s family health services website, from Bradford Council and on the Bradford Breastfeeding Buddies Facebook page.

Councillor Sarah Ferriby, Bradford Council’s executive member for healthy people and places, said: “It is important that families know they still only need to ask for help if they are finding things difficult – the support is out there.”

Health visitors can be contacted weekdays on 01274 221223.

To receive a call back from Bradford Breastfeeding Buddies, text FEED to 66777 with your name, postcode and baby’s date of birth – or due date. Alternatively, send a direct message on Facebook.
