A SERVICE which supports carers is urging them not to neglect their own mental health.

Keighley-based Bradford & Airedale Carer Support Service issued the message ahead of Carers Week, which begins on Monday (June 8).

The organisation – which supports over 250 carers across the region – says that according to Department of Health figures, nearly three quarters of carers have poor physical or mental health themselves.

And it adds that the Covid-19 pandemic has put family carers under even greater strain.

Linda Anderson – team leader with the service, which is operated by national charity Making Space – said: “Our message this Carers Week is that carers need to prioritise their own mental health, so they are as fit as possible to support the person they care for.

“The last three months have not been easy for any of us, but for people with caring responsibilities it has been a really trying time.

“Spending time letting off steam with friends and other carers who understand what you are going through is vital for carers’ own mental health, but social distancing has made this more of a challenge.

“We would usually mark annual Carers Week with a number of meet-ups and events, but this year we have taken our activity online.

“It is still a great opportunity for carers to chat to each other and to celebrate the amazing and often hidden contribution they make to society.”

The service can be contacted between 9am and 6pm weekdays and 10am-2pm at weekends on 07843 267954 or Bradfordcarersupport@makingspace.co.uk.
